Review

Resonance changes the rhythm of A Plague Tale by placing a more capable fighter at the center of the story. Sophia can confront soldiers directly with a blade, using dodges, parries, powerful strikes, and environmental tricks instead of depending almost entirely on stealth. Combat still looks dangerous, but it now gives players more control when an encounter turns violent.
Exploration moves between Sophia’s medieval journey and sections set during ancient Minoan times. These shifts are tied to the mystery surrounding the island rather than functioning as isolated flashbacks. A notebook helps track clues, while a stolen Minoan sphere manipulates light to activate mechanisms and solve environmental puzzles.
The island itself appears more adventurous than the bleak French settings associated with the earlier games. Sunlit ruins, underground labyrinths, traps, treasure hunters, and mythological architecture create a broader range of environments. The pursuing creature should add tension during sections where fighting is not an option, preserving some of the vulnerability that defined the series.
Sophia’s greater combat ability is also the main risk. Direct sword fights could reduce the pressure and careful planning that made previous entries distinctive. The shifts between two historical periods will also need to remain clear enough that the mystery does not become unnecessarily confusing.
Verdict: A confident action-focused expansion of A Plague Tale, combining agile sword combat, elaborate puzzles, and a strong mythological setting around Sophia’s unexplored past.
