Review

Gears of War: E-Day returns to the moment when the Locust were still unknown. Marcus and Dom are experienced soldiers, but they are not yet the hardened figures seen in the original trilogy. Kalona collapses around them over three days, giving the campaign a tighter and more immediate structure than a globe-spanning war story.
Combat retains the series’ cover-based foundation. Players move between defensive positions, suppress enemies, flank exposed targets, and use shotguns or executions when the fighting becomes close. The Prototype Chainsaw Lancer also gives the familiar weapon a narrative origin rather than introducing it as standard equipment.
The darker presentation should make the Locust threatening again. Stronger lighting contrast, detailed destruction, physical gore, and narrower interior spaces support a horror tone without abandoning large firefights. Two-player split-screen and online cooperative play preserve the campaign’s emphasis on fighting alongside a partner.
Horde Siege expands the traditional wave mode across larger maps. Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher classes give four-player squads clearer roles, while competitive Versus provides the faster, more aggressive side of multiplayer.
The return to horror could be weakened if every encounter grows into a large spectacle. Seasonal cosmetics and premium currency may also feel unnecessary in a series once known for straightforward unlocks.
Verdict: A focused origin story that restores the Locust’s horror while rebuilding Gears’ cover combat, cooperative campaign, and multiplayer around modern technology.
