Mortal Shell II
Mortal Shell II releases on August 20, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack, this standalone action RPG sequel once again lets the Harbinger possess the bodies of fallen warriors and use their distinct abilities against false gods. Its interconnected open world expands beyond linear routes, while stamina-free combat, posture-breaking attacks, hardening, executions, medieval firearms, weapon upgrades, hidden structures, hostile regions, and multiple Shells support a faster and less restricted journey through a ravaged land.

Review

Mortal Shell II keeps the possession system that defined the original but places it inside a broader and less restrictive action RPG. Each Shell acts as a separate warrior archetype with its own strengths, allowing players to change combat style without rebuilding one character through conventional classes.
The largest mechanical change is the removal of stamina restrictions. Attacks, evasive movement, and aggressive combinations can flow more freely, while posture damage and critical strikes prevent combat from becoming simple button mashing. Hardening still lets the Harbinger briefly turn rigid during an attack or defensive moment, creating unusual timing opportunities when an enemy commits to a heavy swing.
Weapons receive deeper upgrade paths, and medieval firearms add ranged pressure to the familiar blades and heavier melee options. Executions, stagger mechanics, and broader movesets make fights appear faster than before, but enemies remain capable of punishing careless aggression.
Exploration now takes place across an interconnected open world. Regions contain hidden structures, optional paths, bosses, equipment, and narrative fragments rather than functioning only as corridors between major encounters. The world is described as expansive but deliberately compact, which should help reduce empty travel.
The open beta suggests a more responsive foundation, though the lack of stamina may weaken the careful resource management some players appreciated in the first game. Enemy variety and Shell balance will also determine whether the larger world supports repeated experimentation.
Verdict: A faster and more ambitious sequel that expands Mortal Shell’s possession mechanics without abandoning its hardening system or unforgiving combat identity.
