Expeditions: Samurai enters Early Access on August 7, 2026, for PC. Developed by Campfire Cabal and published by THQ Nordic, this party-based historical RPG begins when the player reaches Japan aboard the battered Dutch frigate De Albatros in 1600. After becoming leader of its privateer crew, the customizable protagonist is drawn into the final stages of the Sengoku civil war, where stealth, diplomacy, tactical combat, personal relationships, political alliances, and difficult decisions can alter the crew’s future and the balance of power across Japan.

Review

Expeditions: Samurai builds on the series’ choice-driven role-playing with a more flexible approach to exploration and combat. Players can move party members independently, scout enemy positions in real time, create distractions, and arrange an ambush before committing to turn-based fighting.

Once combat begins, movement, attacks, and interruptions can overlap rather than following an entirely rigid sequence. Firearms, traditional Japanese weapons, pirate equipment, gadgets, and character abilities create several ways to control the battlefield. Environmental interactions and stealth takedowns also reward preparation before swords are drawn.

The story places the player between rival warlords during a decisive period of Japanese history. Conversations can build friendships, romances, or lasting rivalries with crew members, while political choices affect missions and alliances. Even smaller decisions are intended to carry consequences beyond the immediate dialogue scene.

Drop-in cooperative play is a major addition. Two players take the roles of twins and can explore separately, coordinate attacks, or compete for control during important conversations. That tension could give co-op more personality than simply adding another fighter to every encounter.

The Early Access release contains only a portion of the complete narrative, although it includes exploration, stealth, world-map travel, voiced quests, and the main combat systems. More quests, equipment, crafting options, village management, and story content are planned before version 1.0.

Verdict: A thoughtful historical RPG that expands the Expeditions formula through stealth, flexible tactical battles, consequential relationships, and unusually involved cooperative storytelling.
