Tears of Metal launches in Early Access on July 22, 2026 on PC. Developed and published by Paper Cult, it is a co-op hack-and-slash roguelike about reclaiming a Scottish island after invaders begin carving into the Mother Dragon Stone for its power. The game mixes battlefield-scale pressure with run-based upgrades, permanent troop growth, settlement expansion, multiple heroes, and solo or four-player online co-op built around chaotic pushes through large handcrafted arenas.

Review

Tears of Metal has a strong hook because it understands the appeal of controlled chaos. The pitch is not just to swing through crowds, but to lead a small army through battles that keep escalating as your run develops. That gives the game a good rhythm: clear a field, choose upgrades, pull more soldiers into the cause, then charge into a harder problem with a slightly stranger build than before.
The musou influence is obvious, but the roguelike structure gives it better shape than a simple wave-clearing brawler. Emblems, charms, hero choices, and settlement upgrades should give each campaign a reason to feel different, while permanent soldier growth adds a nice emotional edge. Losing momentum in a run should hurt more when your battalion feels like a force you have actually built.
Co-op is the biggest opportunity. A battlefield game like this can become much more memorable when four players are pushing different angles, covering each other, and trying to save a messy run from collapse. The caveat is readability. With hordes, effects, soldiers, bosses, and online players all moving at once, the game needs clean combat feedback or the screen can turn into noise. Early Access also means balance and content depth will decide how long the loop holds.
Verdict: A promising Scottish roguelike brawler with a clear identity, strong co-op potential, and a lot riding on combat clarity and build variety.
