You follow twin sisters, Mio and Mayu, who wander into an abandoned village that feels stuck in a nightmare. The gimmick is the Camera Obscura, a supernatural camera that turns fear into a weapon. Review

Fatal Frame lives or dies on atmosphere, and Crimson Butterfly has always been one of the series’ sharpest slow burns. The remake leans into that strength. The village is not a set of corridors you sprint through, it is a place you creep around, listening for small cues, watching shadows, and feeling the tension build before a fight even starts. When a ghost finally commits, combat becomes this anxious little dance. You hold your ground to get a stronger shot, but the safest play is often to flinch and fire early. The best captures happen when you stay calm.
The Camera Obscura loop is still a great twist on survival horror combat. It rewards timing and positioning over raw aim, and it naturally fits the story’s tone. You are literally forced to look at the thing chasing you. That is the kind of mechanic that sells horror without cheap tricks.
Pacing is mostly strong, with a steady drip of story that keeps you moving forward, but it can feel methodical if you prefer constant action. Also, the remake’s visual upgrades do not change the core structure. You are still doing careful exploration, backtracking, and puzzle-like searching, so it depends on your tolerance for classic survival horror rhythms.
Verdict: A tense, atmospheric remake that turns fear into a mechanic and makes you earn every brave shot.
