Review

Prelude Dark Pain builds its tactical combat around squad composition, positioning, and environmental control. Battles take place on grid-based maps where elevation, moving terrain, enemy placement, and mission-specific conditions can reshape the safest approach. A squad supports up to five heroes, giving players enough space to combine frontline fighters, ranged damage, assassins, and support characters without making every unit difficult to track.
Each hero has separate talent branches and a broad selection of active and passive skills. The most interesting possibilities come from interactions between characters rather than isolated damage upgrades. One ability might reposition an enemy, another can exploit the exposed target, and a support skill can protect the squad from the retaliation that follows.
Outside combat, players move across a world map, complete side quests, recruit optional heroes, gather resources, improve equipment, and send characters on raids. Choices can alter the story and determine which allies remain available, giving repeat playthroughs more purpose than simply testing another combat build.
The illustrated presentation suits the bleak setting. Strong silhouettes, comic-style scenes, dark environments, and supernatural creatures give Statera an identity beyond standard medieval fantasy.
The Early Access release contains only Act 1, nine heroes, approximately 63 skills, and around 15 hours of content. That is a meaningful starting point, but many promised factions, heroes, crafting systems, and narrative acts will arrive later. Steam also currently lists only memory information for PC hardware.
Verdict: A promising tactical RPG with flexible squads and meaningful battlefield interactions, though the July release is clearly the first portion of a much larger game.
