Review

Alan Wake II works because it commits to mood and gives you enough agency to hold the line. Shooting is tight but not flashy. You clear space with a flashlight cone, line a weak point, and listen for the thump that says a Taken stayed down. Ammo is short, heals are earned, and panic makes you waste both. Saga’s investigations slow the pace just enough. Pin clues, shape a theory, reopen a door you missed. Then the floor tilts and Alan’s half bends reality with scene edits that land like small magic tricks.
Presentation does heavy lifting. Sound design hisses in vents and booms when a thing steps out of the dark. Live action blends with game scenes without feeling like a stunt. Setpieces stick because they know when to cut and when to linger. The musical numbers hit, weird and confident. It is a ride, not a checklist.
Caveats: on PC the first run can hitch while shaders compile, and performance wants a modern GPU if you chase high settings. A few puzzles read fussy until you learn their language. If you skip side notes, some threads feel thin. Even so, when the beam burns a hole in the dark and a path appears that was not there a second ago, it clicks.
Verdict: stylish, nerve‑tight horror that pairs sharp gunplay with playful reality breaks.
