Review

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers chops through expectations with a fierce blend of beauty and brutality. The world is dense—no loading screens, paths twisted around temples and blood-soaked valleys. The tonal shift from mythic Chinese poetry into gut-wrenching combat strikes deep.

Combat is unforgiving, yet thoughtful. The Skyborn Might system pushes aggressive timing, while the Madness mechanic makes every kill or death meaningful—getting too mad alters your appearance and alters combat stats. Your choices shape not just your build, but how the world pushes back.

Graphically and aurally, the world crackles. Temple halls glow in torchlight, feathered horrors screech as they descend. The level design is a masterclass in metroidvania-like loops—explore a ridge, unlock a shortcut, return smarter. The New Game Plus mode and free respecs let you experiment deep into the system.

That said, it’s not without flaws. The PC release stumbled—crashes and texture streaming lag plagued the launch. Performance on heavyweight PCs dropped to 20–30 FPS on Ultra, though enabling DLSS balanced things back toward the 50–70 FPS range. VRAM use spiked heavily.

Critics have split. Some hail it as a standout soulslike, as one of the best since Lies of P. Others call it derivative, with empty environments and feeble storytelling dampening its potential.

Verdict: Wuchang is raw and unyielding, equal parts beauty and blood. It demands sweat—but rewards memories.
