FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE releases October 22, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Developed by Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. and published by Square Enix, it brings the series into HD-2D with a turn-based adventure built around crystals, airships, moogles, espers, and a party of companions bound by fate. The combat hook is classic but busy in a good way: stagger enemies by hitting weaknesses, then call on Visions, echoes of famous FINAL FANTASY heroes, to push battles into bigger, flashier finishers without losing the old-school RPG pace.

Review

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is interesting because it does not treat nostalgia like a museum piece. The HD-2D look is familiar now, but it still works when the game uses it with confidence: tiny character sprites, dramatic camera angles, and battle effects that make old-school composition feel more theatrical than flat. It looks built for players who miss turn-based FINAL FANTASY, but it does not read like a simple apology tour for the action era.
The battle system is the part that needs to carry it. Weakness exploitation and stagger rules give fights an immediate rhythm: test, break, punish. That is a strong foundation because it keeps even standard encounters from becoming pure menu repetition. The Visions system is the bigger swing. Pulling in echoes of beloved characters could feel cheap if it is just fan service, but it has a useful mechanical pitch too, giving players another layer of party tuning and timing.
The mobile-game roots are the obvious caveat. A reworked premium RPG can absolutely escape that shadow, but it has to prove that pacing, progression, and side content were rebuilt for long sessions, not converted from shorter habits. The other concern is balance. If Visions overpower the party, the system becomes spectacle instead of strategy.
Verdict: A promising HD-2D return to turn-based FINAL FANTASY, strongest when it lets classic systems feel modern instead of simply reminding players that they used to exist.
