Sonic Frontiers released on November 7, 2022 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch on the same date. Developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA. Sonic washes up on the Starfall Islands hunting Chaos Emeralds, and the series pivots to open‑zone exploration. The pitch is simple: roam first, then chase S‑ranks when routes click.

Review

Sonic Frontiers finds a new gear by letting movement set the tone. The islands act like giant playgrounds, rails and springs sketching aerial routes while puzzles break up the sprint. Combat reads better than you would expect. Parries and the Cyloop give you options, and bigger guardians ask you to commit with timing, not mash. Cyber Space stages scratch the traditional itch, quick and clean when you learn the line.
The rhythm lands once you stop racing objectives and start charting space. You spot a rail in the sky, chase it, and twenty minutes later you are grinning because a perfect chain carried you from a beach to a boss arena. Performance on PC is solid with the right settings, and updates since launch tightened some rough edges.
It is not spotless. Pop‑in can bite when you move fast, and a few camera angles fight you near big enemies. Early story beats feel thin if you sprint the checklist. The Final Horizon update adds challenge spikes that will split opinions. Even so, when the flow hits and a route sings from muscle memory, it works.
Verdict: open‑zone Sonic that finally feels confident, messy in spots but easy to enjoy.
