Shift At Midnight releases May 28, 2026 on PC. Developed by Bun Muen and published by Kwalee, it’s a co-op detective horror game for up to three players set on the graveyard shift at a rural 90s gas station. You’re juggling chores and quotas while screening customers who might be doppelgangers, checking IDs, cross-referencing details on the computer, and watching behavior for tells. Miss one, and the whole shift flips from “bad job” to “board up and survive.”

Review

Shift At Midnight works because it treats horror like a job you can mess up. The routine is the hook. Stock shelves, clean the place, keep the numbers up, and try not to panic while you play amateur detective on every customer who walks in. That structure gives the game a nice baseline of stress before the monsters even show up. You’re already busy. Now you’re paranoid too.

The doppelganger checks are the most interesting part. They turn the game into a little social puzzle where attention matters. A face doesn’t match an ID. A detail is off. Someone’s acting slightly wrong. In co-op, that’s where the fun is. Friends will argue about a call, hesitate, then either execute the right target or doom the shift because they wanted to be polite.

When the game switches into “survival,” it sounds like it leans into practical horror rather than hero stuff. Board up, place traps, hide. That’s a good escalation because it keeps you in the setting instead of turning the gas station into an arena shooter. Proximity chat is a smart addition too. It makes coordination feel messy and human, which is exactly the mood this concept needs.

Two caveats. Randomized shifts are only as good as their content pool; if the events repeat too quickly, the tension drops. And because the game is built around multiplayer, netcode and stability matter as much as scares.

Verdict: A strong co-op horror concept that uses routine and paranoia as the real monsters, with longevity depending on variety and clean online play.
