Scarlet Deer Inn releases on July 21, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Developed by Attu Games and published by Attu Games and Aurakenn Games, this narrative platformer follows Elise, an ordinary mother of two drawn into a dangerous journey after tragedy disrupts her quiet village life. Its medieval world takes inspiration from Slavic folklore, combining hand-painted environments with character animations made from physically embroidered frames. Exploration shifts between conversations, everyday village tasks, hidden routes, and dark underground areas where a fading torch is often the only protection against lurking creatures.

Review

Scarlet Deer Inn builds its identity around contrast. The opening village sections feel warm and grounded, giving Elise time to speak with residents, complete small tasks, and absorb the rhythms of ordinary medieval life. That slower pace establishes the people and setting before the story begins pushing into darker territory.

Exploration follows a side-scrolling structure, but the focus is not constant platforming or combat. Movement, environmental observation, conversations, and discovering hidden paths carry much of the experience. Underground areas create more pressure through limited visibility and a torch that gradually burns down. Rather than turning Elise into a conventional action hero, the game makes darkness and vulnerability part of the navigation itself.

The presentation is its strongest immediate feature. Characters were animated using real embroidered frames, while the surrounding environments use detailed hand-painted artwork. The technique gives movement a tactile quality that fits the folk-tale setting without making the game feel like a visual experiment with nothing underneath it. Traditional instruments also reinforce the medieval and Slavic influences.

Players looking for deep combat systems or constant mechanical escalation may find the deliberate pacing restrained. The effectiveness of the full experience will also depend heavily on whether the story sustains its early emotional weight. Still, the mix of domestic storytelling, unsettling exploration, and handcrafted presentation gives Scarlet Deer Inn a clear personality.

Verdict: A visually distinctive narrative adventure that uses vulnerability, folklore, and careful pacing more effectively than conventional combat.
