Review

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is built around two games that approach stealth from very different directions. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a heavily cinematic conclusion to Solid Snake’s story, moving through active battlefields where factions, changing conditions, camouflage, gadgets, and enemy awareness shape each infiltration.
Peace Walker uses shorter missions and a broader management structure. Players recruit soldiers, develop equipment, improve Mother Base, and repeat operations to gather resources. Its progression systems make it well suited to portable sessions, while online support for up to six players preserves the cooperative and competitive features that helped distinguish the original release.
Both games reward observation more than direct aggression. Guards react to noise, movement, disguises, and changing battlefield conditions, while gadgets give players several ways to avoid or manipulate an encounter. When combat becomes unavoidable, the controls and larger weapon selection support a more action-oriented approach without completely abandoning stealth.
Ghost Babel is a valuable inclusion rather than a disposable extra. Its compact levels translate the series’ core detection and infiltration systems into a top-down handheld format, offering a different but recognizable interpretation of Metal Gear.
The collection’s weakness is its narrow main lineup. Two headline games may feel limited compared with larger compilations, particularly for players uninterested in books or soundtrack content. Metal Gear Solid 4’s long cinematics will also remain divisive.
Verdict: An important preservation package that finally brings Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker together on modern hardware, supported by worthwhile archival extras.
