Permafrost
Permafrost enters Early Access on October 9, 2026, for PC. Developed by SpaceRocket Games and published by Toplitz Productions, this story-driven survival sandbox follows Rook, an engineer drawn into a frozen post-apocalyptic world by a radio message from a missing friend. Players explore ruined cities and wilderness alone or in four-player online co-op, manage exposure and frostbite, hunt, scavenge, craft equipment, repair machinery, navigate faction territory, build connected shelters, and rely on a rescued dog that can scout, warn of danger, and carry supplies.

Review

Permafrost treats temperature as the main enemy rather than a background survival meter. Every trip requires suitable clothing, supplies, shelter access, and awareness of changing weather. A journey that looks manageable can become dangerous when a storm arrives or the player remains exposed for too long.
Progression is driven by exploration. Rook restores abandoned shelters, repairs machines, finds technology, and creates a network of safer locations across the map. This structure gives building a practical role because each outpost extends how far the player can travel before the cold becomes overwhelming.
The dog companion adds useful support without replacing human cooperation. It can scout routes, identify danger, and carry items, while up to three friends can divide gathering, construction, hunting, and exploration duties. Co-op does not remove environmental pressure, so a larger group still needs enough resources to survive.
The world favors silence and scarcity over constant gunfire. Frozen cities, abandoned infrastructure, faction-controlled areas, and stretches of wilderness give the setting a grounded tone despite the catastrophe that shattered the moon and changed the climate.
Early Access remains the main caveat. More biomes, quests, characters, enemies, equipment, and vehicles are planned, and balancing survival systems may take time. Resource collection could also become repetitive if shelter progression moves too slowly.
Verdict: A grounded winter survival game with meaningful shelter networks, strong environmental pressure, and a companion system that fits its isolated world.
