Aphelion releases April 28, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed and published by DON’T NOD, it follows astronaut Ariane on a frozen planet where the mission has already gone sideways and her partner, Thomas, is badly hurt. The game leans into cinematic sci-fi tension, mixing exploration and traversal with stealthy, pressure-heavy sequences that make the environment feel like a threat even before anything starts hunting you.

Review

Aphelion is aiming for a specific kind of sci-fi adventure: human-scale survival inside a huge, indifferent landscape. The premise is simple, rescue your partner, get out alive, but the tone suggests it won’t let you treat the planet like a theme park. The best version of this game is one where traversal feels physical and risky, where every route choice has weight because the environment punishes hesitation.
Stealth is the more interesting angle here. Sci-fi games often lean on shooting to create stakes, but stealth forces a different kind of attention. You’re reading sightlines, listening for movement, and making decisions based on partial information. If the game’s “shifting realities” idea is used well, it can add another layer of uncertainty that fits the story instead of feeling like a gimmick.
DON’T NOD is also good at character-driven tension when it keeps dialogue tight and lets scenes breathe. With only two leads at the core, the writing has room to make the relationship feel real, not just functional. The caveat is pacing. Cinematic adventures can stumble if they over-script the player or rely on slow walk-and-talk segments too often. The other risk is that stealth-heavy games need clear, consistent rules. If enemies feel unpredictable in the wrong way, tension turns into frustration.
Verdict: A promising, character-focused sci-fi adventure that could land hard if its traversal feels dangerous and its stealth systems stay fair and readable.
