DOOM: The Dark Ages
DOOM: The Dark Ages trades Eternal’s air-dashing chaos for a heavier, “stand and fight” rhythm. The new Shield Saw is the star: you block, parry, throw it like a buzzsaw, then catch and flow straight back into carnage. Add the flail/mace and a chunkier arsenal, and fights feel like brutal set pieces where spacing and timing matter more than bunny hops. The medieval-hell art direction sells the fantasy—rusted steel, stained glass, titan-sized war machines—without sacrificing readability. If you want DOOM that hits hard and asks you to learn the tells, this is that flavor.

Review
Combat, pace, and the Shield Saw. Encounters push you to hold your ground, break openings with parries, and cash out with big, committed strings. The Shield Saw ties it together: it’s defense, offense, and crowd control in one—block a lunge, riposte into a stun, then ricochet the shield through a pack before finishing with a chunky takedown. It feels deliberate and readable rather than twitchy for twitch’s sake.
Level and encounter design. Arenas telegraph intent—sightlines, flanking lanes, and vertical bites that encourage repositioning instead of circle-strafing forever. Secrets are back in force, but the campaign keeps momentum, flowing from arena to arena with short detours instead of labyrinths. Story beats don’t overstay their welcome; the series tone is still “metal album cover brought to life.”
Set-piece variety. The Atlan mech stomps and the dragon flights sell the scale, even if they’re lighter mechanically; they break up the cadence without stealing hours. When The Dark Ages returns you to boots-on-ground slaughter, it’s at its best.
Audio/visual punch. The score by Finishing Move leans percussive and sinister rather than wall-to-wall djent; it fits the era. The image is dense—volumetrics, sparks, shattered plate—yet the action stays legible at speed. Expect to use an upscaler and an SSD; the PC build is hungry but scales well after a few toggles.
Bottom line. A confident, grounded take on modern DOOM: fewer air tricks, more teeth-rattling impact. If you like crisp reads, parry-driven openings, and arenas that punish slop, it delivers.
