Review

The Sinking City 2 moves away from the investigation-led structure of its predecessor and commits more directly to survival horror. Arkham is divided into flooded streets, damaged buildings, hidden interiors, and darker underground spaces that gradually open through discovered shortcuts. Returning to earlier districts can reveal ammunition, resources, optional cases, and upgrades that make later encounters more manageable.
Combat is deliberately resource-conscious. Handguns, shotguns, and other firearms can stop the Slither, Deep Ones, and stranger creatures, but ammunition is limited enough that retreat often remains sensible. Inventory decisions matter because carrying more healing supplies or crafting materials means leaving something else behind.
Optional investigations preserve part of Frogwares’ detective identity. Reading ritual traces, examining disturbing scenes, decoding journals, and following side cases can unlock safer paths, weapon improvements, and valuable supplies. These investigations are not required for story progress, so they support exploration without blocking players who prefer a more direct route.
The flooded city has a strong sense of place. Art Deco buildings, abandoned speakeasies, hospitals, markets, submerged roads, and skiff routes create variety without losing the oppressive Lovecraftian tone.
Its heavier combat focus may disappoint players who preferred the first game’s detective work. The recommended PC specification is also demanding, requiring 32 GB of memory and a high-end graphics card for the listed 1440p target.
Verdict: A focused Lovecraftian survival horror game that combines scarce resources, unsettling exploration, and optional detective work inside a convincingly ruined Arkham.
