Review

Outbound is the kind of cozy game that lives on one simple fantasy: having your own little world, then taking it with you. The van-as-home concept is doing most of the work here, because it gives every upgrade a practical meaning. Add a station, add storage, optimize energy, and suddenly your next trip feels smoother. It’s not “decorate a house.” It’s “build a system you can live in,” and that’s a satisfying flavor of progression.
The best version of Outbound will be one where the open world supports small discoveries, not endless chores. Cozy games can fall into the trap of turning every activity into a grind loop. Here, the loop should feel like a road trip: new scenery, light resource collection, a few small projects, then the pleasure of packing up and moving on. The renewable energy angle is a nice touch because it can create gentle constraints without feeling punitive. You’re not starving. You’re managing power, planning routes, and making choices about what matters in your setup.
Co-op (up to four players on the Steam page) could make it a great hangout game if the building tools are smooth and roles naturally emerge. The main caveat is long-term variety. Once players have a “good enough” van, the game needs new reasons to keep exploring beyond cosmetics.
Verdict: A strong cozy concept with real progression satisfaction, as long as its world stays discovery-driven and its systems don’t drift into busywork.
