Developed and published by Capcom, this dark fantasy swordplay action game follows Miyamoto Musashi through an Edo-period Kyoto corrupted by Miasma and invaded by the demonic Genma. Review

Onimusha: Way of the Sword brings the series back through deliberate sword combat rather than turning it into a conventional open-world RPG. Musashi’s movement is grounded, and each exchange emphasizes reading an enemy, controlling distance, and choosing the correct response instead of maintaining an endless attack string.

Parries and deflections are central to the flow. Incoming blades and projectiles can be redirected, creating openings for counters and brutal finishing moves. The Oni Gauntlet absorbs souls from defeated Genma, tying combat directly to recovery and supernatural power.

Enemy design supports several types of pressure. Human swordsmen test timing and technique, while Genma introduce less predictable bodies, weapons, and attack patterns. Encounters often place several threats in the same area, forcing Musashi to reposition rather than remain locked into a single duel.

Kyoto provides a more structured setting than a large open map. Temples, streets, hidden chambers, and corrupted landmarks combine historical detail with grotesque fantasy. Environmental puzzles and quieter exploration sections should keep the campaign from becoming one continuous sequence of battles.

The heavy focus on swordplay means combat variety will depend on enemy design and meaningful upgrades. Players expecting the broader progression of a Soulslike may also find its more directed structure restrictive.

Verdict: A violent and disciplined revival of Onimusha that puts precise swordplay, demonic spectacle, and a carefully built Kyoto ahead of open-world excess.
