Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved releases July 28, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Halo Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios, it is a rebuilt and expanded take on the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, with modern visuals, refreshed cinematics, refined controls, and three new missions set before the classic story. The core is still Master Chief and Cortana fighting across Installation 04, but the remake widens the sandbox with extra weapons, vehicles, enemies, Skulls, and up to four-player online co-op with cross-play.

Review

Halo: Campaign Evolved has a difficult job because the original campaign is not just old, it is memorized. Players know the rhythm of the beaches, the corridors, the Warthog runs, and the mistakes that became part of the legend. A remake cannot simply look cleaner. It has to make those spaces feel worth moving through again.
The smartest choice is keeping the campaign focus. By skipping competitive multiplayer and leaning into solo, split-screen on consoles, and four-player online co-op, Halo Studios can treat this as a campaign-first rebuild rather than a nostalgia package stretched across too many modes. The three new Operation: Meteorite missions are the biggest test. If they feel like natural Halo, not bonus padding, they could give returning players a real reason to care.
The expanded sandbox also matters. Adding later-series weapons and more Skulls can make familiar encounters feel less solved, especially in co-op. The danger is overfilling the original structure. Combat Evolved worked because its fights had room to breathe. Too many tools or modifiers could turn clean combat spaces into noise.
The remake also needs to respect the oddness of the original: long quiet stretches, alien geometry, and that slow shift from military sci-fi into horror. If the modern visuals sharpen those moods instead of smoothing them away, this could become more than a museum piece.
Verdict: A promising campaign-first remake that has the right priorities, with success depending on whether the new missions and expanded sandbox enhance Halo without overexplaining it.
