Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles arrives on 30 September 2025 for PC, PS4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Square Enix rebuilt the game from scratch—without the original source code—based on retail and mobile versions. You get two ways to play: Classic, honoring the 1997 original with PSP’s “War of the Lions” translation and original-style battles, or Enhanced, with full voice acting, updated UI, quality-of-life features, and refreshed visuals. This is one of the most beloved tactical JRPGs ever, and this remaster promises to feel both familiar and brand new.

Review

Final Fantasy Tactics still sets the gold standard for strategy JRPGs. Now, playing The Ivalice Chronicles on PC feels snug and modern. Rotating camera angles, clearer turn order, and voice lines give every battle more clarity and weight. You build your team, swap jobs mid-battle, summon a moogle or cast Meteor. The tactical choices still bite.

The world keeps its depth. Ramza isn’t just another noble cadet—he’s in the thick of war and politics, surrounded by betrayal, faith, and justice. Voice acting helps drive that narrative, though a few performances feel stiff in key scenes. The Enhanced UI makes planning easier: zoom out, see turn lineups, hit fast-forward on uneventful turns. It respects old fans while onboarding newcomers.

The PC version is solid. Visuals crisp up at higher resolution, and the enhanced menus feel responsive. Expect no framerate issues even on mid-tier machines. A few textures pop in slightly late, but nothing breaks immersion.

If you lean toward nostalgia, the Classic mode stands strong. I played through the opening hour in both modes back to back—it’s the same story, but the Enhanced version just flows smoother. Still, seeing the voice acting go over classic dialogue can feel odd at times.

Verdict: One of the most thoughtful remasters in years. It respects where it came from—and invites you to stay in Ivalice longer.
