Capcom’s History With Denuvo Removal Raises Questions Among Resident Evil Fans

Discussion around Capcom’s use of Denuvo has returned to the spotlight. Resident Evil players often point out that while the main entries in the series eventually see the DRM removed, the same does not always happen with expansions. Resident Evil Village is one of the clearest examples. The base game had Denuvo taken out, but its DLC packs kept the system. Fans argue that this creates a situation where the change feels incomplete. Even if the additional content was stripped of the protection, it would still depend on the base game, which means the restriction stays in place.

Looking back at previous titles

Capcom’s history suggests there may be a pattern. Resident Evil 7 had its DRM removed only a few days after the Resident Evil 2 Remake launched. Resident Evil 2 itself lost Denuvo months before the arrival of Resident Evil 3 Remake. Later, Resident Evil 3 went through the same process in the lead-up to Village. Most recently, Resident Evil Village had the protection disabled about a month after Resident Evil 4 Remake came out. These examples are why players believe removals are often tied to the release window of the next major title.

Speculation around Resident Evil Requiem

The upcoming release of Resident Evil Requiem has added fuel to the discussion. Some fans think Capcom may once again use the launch window of new content to adjust DRM in older titles. Others are more doubtful, noting that downloadable expansions make the process more complex. DLC relies directly on the base game, and removing Denuvo only from part of the package would not solve the underlying dependency. This uncertainty keeps the community divided.

Community reaction and ongoing debate

What stands out is that the debate continues every time a new Resident Evil project gets closer. For some players, DRM decisions affect how they perceive the long-term support of the series. For others, the focus is less about performance or restrictions and more about consistency—whether Capcom follows the same pattern it has in the past or decides to change course.

At this stage, Capcom has not made any official comment regarding Denuvo removals for Resident Evil 4. Until there is confirmation, the community can only look at previous examples and speculate. What seems certain is that the subject will keep coming back, as Denuvo remains part of the conversation whenever the future of Resident Evil is discussed.
