Agent 64: Spies Never Die deliberately recreates the structure of late-1990s console shooters rather than simply applying low-resolution textures to a modern FPS. Missions place the player inside compact locations with several objectives, guarded routes, locked areas, hidden information, and enough freedom to approach tasks in different orders.
Gunplay is direct and readable. Enemies react quickly, weapons carry exaggerated recoil, and close-range fights can become messy when alarms draw additional guards. Stealth remains useful, but the game also allows missions to continue after a quiet approach collapses into a loud firefight.
Difficulty settings change more than enemy health. Harder missions introduce additional objectives and complications, giving experienced players reasons to learn layouts and plan efficient routes. Unlockable cheats and modifiers provide another form of replayability once the main campaign has been completed.
Co-op changes the campaign’s pacing by allowing two agents to divide objectives or cover separate entrances. Competitive multiplayer expands to four-player local split screen and eight players online, supported by deathmatch, objective modes, bots, and timed challenges.
The intentionally dated controls and visual style may feel stiff to players without nostalgia for Nintendo 64 shooters. Enemy behavior and level layouts also need enough consistency to make failures feel earned rather than caused by retro limitations.
