The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu
The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu releases July 15, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by ACE Team and published by Nacon, it is a four-player co-op horror adventure about explorers chasing treasure into a jungle that clearly does not want to be mapped. The setup is classic pulp horror: search for an ancient underground city, manage fear as reality starts slipping, and try to keep the group together when monsters, hallucinations, and bad decisions make every step feel like a dare.

Review

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu has a strong premise because it uses co-op against the players. Horror with friends can easily turn into comedy, but a good sanity system can make the group itself unstable. If one player sees something others do not, or starts making bad calls because the game is quietly messing with them, teamwork becomes a problem instead of a solution.
The expedition setup also helps. You are not just trapped in a haunted house. You are pushing into unknown territory for a reason, which gives the fear a practical rhythm: explore, gather clues, decide whether to keep going, then regret that decision. A buried city is a good horror space because it can mix tight tunnels, ritual architecture, and sudden open chambers without feeling random.
ACE Team usually has a strong eye for strange worlds, and that matters here. Lovecraft-inspired games can become generic tentacle wallpaper if they lean only on names. The Mound needs texture: hostile terrain, artifacts that feel wrong, creatures that do not behave like normal enemies, and a sense that the explorers are not built to understand what they found.
Two caveats stand out. First, four-player horror needs pacing that survives voice chat and jokes. Second, the sanity mechanic has to be fair. If it creates confusion without readable consequences, it becomes annoying instead of frightening.
Verdict: A promising co-op horror expedition with a strong sanity hook, with its impact depending on whether fear disrupts teamwork in smart, readable ways.
