Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss releases April 16, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Big Bad Wolf and published by Nacon, it’s a first-person investigative horror thriller set in 2053, where a deep-sea mining station has gone silent and the occult is starting to look less like rumor and more like infrastructure. You play as Noah, an agent pulled into a case that leads down into R’lyeh itself, with an AI companion named Key acting as support while the game tests your sanity, your judgment, and your willingness to keep going when the answers stop feeling human.

Review

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is leaning into a good kind of contrast: corporate sci-fi on the surface, ancient horror underneath. A missing mining crew is the sort of clean premise that lets the game start grounded, then gradually twist the screws as you go deeper. The best Lovecraftian stories don’t begin with madness. They begin with procedure. Check the station. Read the logs. Follow the rules. Then watch those rules fail.
Big Bad Wolf’s strength, historically, is cinematic storytelling and character-led tension, and that’s a smart fit for a first-person investigative game. If the branching narrative and choice structure are meaningful, it can turn the “sanity” angle into more than a meter. The goal should be doubt, choices that feel rational in the moment and questionable in hindsight.
The setting is the real weapon. R’lyeh is an overused word in games, but a deep-sea labyrinth built on impossible angles can still land if the level design is confident. Unreal Engine 5 tech talk doesn’t matter much on its own, but it can help if it supports atmosphere: oppressive scale, murky visibility, and spaces that feel wrong before anything attacks you.
Two caveats. Investigative horror can fall apart if it becomes a scavenger hunt, and “multiple endings” only matters if the paths feel earned, not arbitrary. If the game keeps its puzzles and clues tight, it has a strong foundation.
Verdict: A promising investigative horror built on a clean setup and a great setting, with its impact depending on disciplined pacing and choices that actually reshape the story.
