Darwin’s Paradox! is at its best when it remembers what an octopus actually feels like in a videogame: soft movement, smart escapes, and a constant sense that the world is bigger than you in the most unfair way. The industrial setting is hostile, but not in the “everything is spikes” sense. It’s hostile because it’s indifferent. You’re navigating conveyor belts, holding tanks, and weird corners of a factory that has its own rhythm, and your job is to survive inside that rhythm.
The stealth and puzzle platforming work because Darwin’s toolkit is built around avoidance, not dominance. Camouflage and ink feel more like problem-solving tools than gimmicks, especially when a room gives you multiple ways to slip through it. The strongest sequences let you chain small wins, hide, move, grab a ledge, hold your breath, then dart again. It creates tension without needing constant combat.
Visually, the game sells a high-contrast, animated-movie vibe that fits the character. Darwin reads clearly in motion and the environments have enough detail to feel physical without turning into noise. The main caveat is pacing. Puzzle platformers like this can sag if they repeat the same “trap corridor” structure too often, and some players will want more moments where the octopus abilities get pushed harder, not just used as keys.
Still, when the game leans into its creature fantasy, it feels distinct.
