Review

Silver Pines combines two genres that already depend heavily on controlled access. Survival horror uses locked doors and scarce resources to create tension, while metroidvanias use new abilities and tools to gradually open earlier locations. Here, those ideas reinforce each other.
Red Walker begins with limited access to the town, but better equipment and tools reveal new routes through previously blocked areas. Returning to an old location is therefore not only about finding collectibles. It may provide ammunition, medicine, clues, or a path toward another part of Eddie Velvet’s disappearance.
Resource management keeps exploration tense. Inventory space is restricted, bullets are valuable, and avoiding a creature may sometimes be more sensible than killing it. Larger monsters and bosses create situations where preparation matters even more.
The 2.5D perspective gives the town a distinctive visual identity. Hand-drawn environments, heavy shadows, abandoned buildings, and surreal horror imagery make Silver Pines feel less like a conventional side-scroller and more like an interactive graphic novel.
The mystery surrounding Eddie provides a useful narrative reason to keep pushing deeper into dangerous areas rather than simply exploring for upgrades.
Its biggest challenge is keeping backtracking tense instead of repetitive. Once familiar routes become safe, the horror could weaken unless the town changes or new threats appear.
Verdict: A strong combination of survival horror scarcity and metroidvania exploration, built around a town where every new tool can reveal another disturbing layer of the mystery.
