Review

Resident Evil 7 works because it commits to intimacy and fear. The Baker house is a lived‑in maze of shortcuts, locks, and nasty surprises. Early hours rely on stealth and evasion, then the toolset widens with better weapons and chem mixups that make every shot a choice. First‑person makes headshots and stagger windows feel earned, and enemy behavior keeps you guessing without cheap reads. Pacing is sharp. The house, the old house, and the boat deliver distinct vibes, and the game rarely wastes your time.
A couple of caveats. The late game trades dread for action and loses some texture, and mouse smoothing on PC may need tweaking. Even so, the Gold Edition is the way to play, bundling smart DLC that experiments with tone and mechanics.
Verdict: lean, nasty survival horror that rebooted the series with confidence.
