over the hill
over the hill releases on October 14, 2026, for PC, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions also confirmed. Developed by Funselektor Labs Inc. and Strelka Games and published by Funselektor Labs Inc., this open-world off-road exploration game from the creator of art of rally focuses on iconic 4×4 vehicles from the 1960s through the 1980s rather than conventional racing. Solo exploration and four-player online co-op are built around choosing routes through forests, lakesides, valleys, and mountains, using winches and planks to escape difficult terrain, finding portals and meteorites, photographing wildlife, unlocking equipment, and adapting to dynamic weather, day/night cycles, and deformable ground.

Review

over the hill makes an important distinction immediately: this is a driving game, not a racing game. There is no pressure to maintain maximum speed or shave seconds from a stage. Progress comes from understanding terrain and figuring out how to reach a destination without burying a vehicle in mud.
Vehicle choice matters because different situations reward different capabilities. Steep inclines, water, loose ground, and narrow trails can require careful throttle control or a completely different route. Planks help bridge gaps, while winches can recover a vehicle after a bad decision.
The open environments support that slower pace. Remote cabins, landmarks, wildlife, meteorites, viewpoints, and portals provide reasons to leave obvious roads. Dynamic weather and day/night changes can alter visibility and terrain conditions, making a familiar route less predictable on another trip.
Up to four players can explore together online. Cooperative recovery should be one of the game’s strongest features, especially when one vehicle becomes stuck and the rest of the group has to improvise a solution.
The minimalist presentation also fits the relaxed structure. It resembles art of rally’s visual restraint but applies it to a much more physical environment where suspension, terrain deformation, and equipment are central.
The biggest concern is objective variety. Beautiful landscapes and satisfying vehicle physics can carry exploration a long way, but repetitive destination-based tasks could eventually reduce the incentive to keep travelling.
Verdict: A calm but mechanically involved off-road adventure that replaces racing pressure with route finding, vehicle recovery, exploration, and cooperative problem solving.
