MKDEV returns to cracking Denuvo: is the old guard back?

Persona 5 Royal on PC has finally fallen. Over two years after Atlus brought the JRPG to Steam with Denuvo built in, a new release tagged PERSONA.5.ROYAL.CRACKONLY.BETA.READNFO-MKDEV appeared on CrackWatch, credited to long-time cracker MKDEV. For PC players who had already written the game off as “never going to happen”, the name attached to this crack is almost as surprising as the crack itself.

The timing is impossible to ignore: this is happening just weeks after EMPRESS officially retired from the scene and while voices38 is in the spotlight for clearing out older Denuvo titles. At the same time, our own coverage of Empress stepping away framed her exit as the end of a whole era. Now, out of nowhere, one of the older names in PC cracking is back, claiming a fresh victory over one of the most requested Denuvo-protected JRPGs on Steam.

Persona 5 Royal and its long Denuvo road

The PC version of Persona 5 Royal launched in October 2022 with Denuvo Anti-Tamper, and quickly became known as one of the more annoying implementations of the DRM. Steam Deck users in particular have complained about strict activation limits, odd behaviour in offline mode and token resets that could lock them out for 24 hours if they hit too many re-authorisations in a short window. For many, it felt like exactly the kind of game that would drive interest in a crack – but nothing appeared for years.

That long wait is why today’s crack-only beta release hit so hard. The new NFO warns that this is a test build and asks players to fully try the game and report any issues before a final version is locked in. It is not a repack or a full upload, just the crack component – but it is enough for people who own the game or have a backup to finally play Persona 5 Royal without Denuvo’s online checks.

What MKDEV is saying in the new NFO

We cannot reproduce the whole NFO here, but one line captures the tone:

A proper crack must never require you to run a driver on your system or use any other methods that can be broken by a Windows update.

It is a reminder of MKDEV’s old-school philosophy: avoid invasive tricks, keep distance from kernel-level components, and focus on solutions that will still work when Microsoft ships yet another patch. Compared to some recent workarounds that rely on emulated launchers or third-party drivers, his approach is pitched as cleaner and more future-proof.

The NFO also positions this release as a beta on purpose. MKDEV asks users to stress-test the crack, report crashes or progress issues and help refine it into a final version – a sign that he is treating Persona 5 Royal as a serious long-term target rather than a one-off stunt.

A comeback in the middle of the voices38 era

Until now, almost all the big Denuvo headlines in 2024 and 2025 belonged to voices38. In our feature about him, we tracked how he brought down long-standing holdouts like FIFA 20, FIFA 21, Need for Speed Heat, Total War: Three Kingdoms and, most recently, Hi-Fi Rush – including a protection stack that swapped Denuvo for VMProtect and publisher-owned DRM.

CrackWatch users quickly started talking about “two destroyers of Denuvo” once MKDEV’s name resurfaced. One popular thread describes his return with Persona 5 Royal and mentions a universal Denuvo crack tool called Hypervisor that he claims to be working on. If that tool is real and stable, it could theoretically be applied to multiple games instead of building a unique solution for each title from scratch.

That is a very different narrative from Empress’s farewell. In her long statement, she framed modern Denuvo cracking as a health-breaking grind with little appreciation from the community and argued that the age of piracy should end in favour of buying games. MKDEV, by contrast, is stepping back into the ring precisely when many assumed that only one or two people were left willing to fight Denuvo at all.

What this could mean for other Denuvo-protected games

With Persona 5 Royal now running under an MKDEV crack, speculation is already shifting to other stubborn titles. Long-standing lists of uncracked Denuvo games still include sports titles, racing games and smaller AA projects from the late 2010s and early 2020s. Voices38 has already cleared out a big chunk of that backlog; if MKDEV really does have a more generalised tool in development, some of the remaining entries might not stay untouched for much longer.

There are still big question marks:

  • Is MKDEV planning a full return, or is Persona 5 Royal a one-off passion project?
  • Will his alleged Hypervisor tool be released publicly, kept private, or just used as an internal framework for future cracks?
  • And how will publishers respond if older catalogues start to fall in quick succession while new releases are still protected?

For now, nobody outside his circle knows the answers. But the combination of voices38 methodically working through old Denuvo builds and MKDEV reappearing with one of the most requested JRPG cracks sends a clear signal: even after Empress’s retirement, the Denuvo war is far from over.

For players, nothing changes overnight – but the mood has shifted

As always, it is worth stressing that cracks do not change how Denuvo behaves on legitimate copies. Persona 5 Royal on Steam still uses Denuvo, with all the same activation rules and token limitations it had yesterday. Publishers are the only ones who can decide to remove or relax those protections for paying customers.

What has changed is the mood around some of the “never happening” titles. The combination of Empress stepping away, voices38 clearing out long-standing problem games and MKDEV now cracking a high-profile JRPG shows that the skill and interest to fight Denuvo still exists – it just moves from one handle to another.

Whether this marks the beginning of a full MKDEV comeback or just a brief cameo, today’s release is a genuine milestone for PC players who have been following Denuvo for years.
