Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong launched on PC and PlayStation 5 on August 20, 2024, and landed on Xbox Series X|S exactly a year later on August 20, 2025. It’s a tight, boss-first action RPG where you step in as the Destined One, fighting with a weighty staff, short dodges that actually clear danger, and parries that open real punish windows. Mid-fight transformations break patterns instead of just padding stats, and the bestiary leans into Chinese folklore in ways that feel eerie without resorting to generic fantasy. Fights read cleanly, animations sell intent, and the game rewards learning a moveset rather than rushing through it.

Review

Combat feel. Wukong’s kit is compact but expressive. Short strings hit hard, recovery is honest, and the parry window is tight enough to be learned rather than guessed. The staff has a satisfying “thud” on impact, and once you begin stitching transformations into your routes, the moveset opens up without turning into animation soup.
Boss design. Fights read cleanly—big tells, phase changes that escalate rather than reset, and arenas that quietly teach spacing. A few bosses lean on chip damage or long second phases, but the majority reward patience, pattern recognition, and smart burst windows. It’s challenging, rarely cheap.
Progression & builds. This isn’t a sandbox of infinite builds. Progression is focused: a handful of tools with meaningful upgrades instead of a flood of loot. The upside is clarity—you always know why you won or lost. The downside is that min-maxers may crave more knobs to turn.
Level flow. Routes are directed rather than sprawling. You move briskly between set pieces, with detours for upgrades and optional encounters. It keeps momentum high, though players who love labyrinthine exploration might want denser side paths.
Presentation. The folklore angle gives enemies personality; even “fodder” looks specific rather than reskinned. Materials, lighting, and VFX make the world feel dense without burying readability. Music swells at the right moments and sells the mythic tone.
PC experience. It’s demanding. Upscalers (DLSS/FSR/XeSS) help a lot, and an SSD isn’t optional if you want smooth traversal loads. Tuning shadows and volumetrics usually buys the best performance per visual hit. Controller play feels great; keyboard/mouse is fine but less natural.
What could be better. Camera snags can happen in tight corners, and a couple of late fights flirt with endurance more than variety. If you live for deep buildcraft or sprawling ARPG systems, the streamlined approach may feel lean.
Bottom line. A focused, boss-forward action game with weighty hits, readable difficulty, and style to spare. It respects your time, but it will ask you to learn.
