Review

Criterion’s open‑world structure still works, a freeform map that lets you bounce between races, speed runs, jumps, and cop duels without menus. Cars are instantly swappable at Jack Spots, which keeps momentum high and experimentation easy. Handling sits in the breezy arcade lane, predictable enough to throw into long drifts yet punchy when you nail exits. The cop AI escalates well, mixing roadblocks, spike strips, and rhinos that force quick reads and aggressive takedowns. Autolog remains the secret sauce, surfacing buddy times and turning solo routes into asynchronous rivalry.
The progression system ties upgrades to event wins for each car, a clean loop that makes even repeat routes useful. Traffic density and rubber‑banding can frustrate, especially in longer races where one blind corner wipes a PB. Visuals show their age, though art direction and sense of speed still land. On PC the port is light on settings, but it runs smoothly on modern hardware.
Verdict: Still a fast, messy, grin‑first racer where cops and friends keep you pushing.
