Review

Escape the Backrooms works because it understands tension. Levels feel wrong in familiar ways, with humming lights, beige hallways, and spaces that loop just enough to scramble direction. The rule set stays readable. You scan for clues, check corners, and whisper over proximity chat because enemies react to noise. In co‑op, the “no wanderer left behind” rule adds stakes. Everyone must reach the exit, so splits are planned, and rescues become stories you retell after the run.
The pacing shifts as you move deeper. Early sections are about orientation and threat checks. Later levels mix stealth, environmental puzzles, and sprint‑to‑safe‑room sprints that spike adrenaline. Presentation sells the mood. Minimal UI keeps focus on space and sound, and the audio design does heavy lifting with buzz, footsteps, and distant knocks that make you second‑guess choices. It runs well on modest hardware, which helps fill lobbies.
Two caveats. Repetition can creep in if your group stalls on the same level, and public lobbies live or die on mic etiquette. With friends and a plan, the loop clicks and the fear becomes fun.
Verdict: tense, readable co‑op horror that turns proximity chat into a mechanic.
