Review

Farthest Frontier is a city builder about pressure and planning. The farming model anchors everything. Crops have heat, frost, and disease profiles, so rotations and soil work are not busywork, they are survival. Desirability turns housing into a puzzle, since markets, wells, and shrines add value, while tanners and foundries push it down. The economy scales cleanly. Early tool chains feel intimate, then iron, glass, and luxury goods slot in without breaking the loop. Raiders raise the stakes if you let them. Palisades, towers, and barracks add a clear defensive arc, and a pacifist toggle exists if you want pure stress from weather and wildlife.
Presentation sells the sim. Work animations show where bottlenecks form, carts and roads make throughput visible, and the soundscape makes seasons feel different. The UI surfaces key data with crop summaries, heatmaps, and tech tooltips that prevent blind guesses. Two caveats. Late game pathing can wobble in dense cities, and large farms punish mistakes that you notice hours later. Performance on mid‑range rigs is good with settings tuned, but big maps still like a fast CPU.
Even with those edges, the 1.0 build lands as a confident survival city builder with systems that talk to each other.
Verdict: thoughtful, demanding city‑builder that rewards planning and patience.
