Half-Life 2 released on November 16, 2004 for PC (Steam, Windows), later reaching macOS in 2010 and Linux in 2013, with console versions on Xbox, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Developed and published by Valve. You wake in City 17 under Combine rule, a physics‑driven shooter where the world pushes back. The Gravity Gun turns junk into tools, puzzles fold into combat, and set pieces keep momentum without killing player agency.

Review

Half-Life 2 still works because it trusts pacing and physics. Encounters feel staged yet open. You block a doorway with a radiator, punt a saw blade through a headcrab, then sprint when a Strider cuts your plan in half. The Gravity Gun makes spaces readable. You see props as options, not clutter, and the game keeps handing you rooms that reward that mindset. Gunplay is clean. SMG for panic, shotgun for hallways, crossbow for smug distances. Enemies sell roles without overcomplicating things.
The road trip structure keeps the world fresh. Coastal drives, canal runs, and the Ravenholm detour change rhythm without losing the thread. Alyx anchors the human side, more partner than escort, and her beats give the quiet stretches some weight. Presentation still lands. Source lighting and sound design do enough, and the art direction carries scenes the tech no longer can.
It shows its age in spots. Squad AI gets overeager, and vehicle handling can feel floaty until you settle in. Checkpoints occasionally split harder fights in odd places. None of it dents the pull. Rooms feel like problems, not boxes, and the next corridor always hides a trick you want to try.
Verdict: timeless pacing and smart physics that still make shooters feel young.
