Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake released on October 30, 2025 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Developed by Square Enix and ARTDINK, and published by Square Enix. This package rebuilds the first two Erdrick tales in the HD‑2D style. In DQ I you play a descendant of Erdrick across Alefgard, hunting the Dragonlord and rescuing the princess. DQ II jumps forward a generation, putting a trio of royal heirs on a longer journey that adds ships, bigger dungeons, and full party combat. Turn based battles remain the spine, with cleaner UI, brighter towns, and music that leans into the retro feel.

Review

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake stays simple, and that is the point. DQ I is short and focused. You grind a bit, buy gear, and push deeper into Alefgard until the map finally clicks. It feels like a pilgrimage to where console RPGs began. DQ II widens the scope. Three heroes, a ship to chase distant hints, dungeons that ask for proper prep. Fights are still fast, but party roles matter more, and the victory screen has that old punch.
The remake work helps. The HD‑2D look gives towns warmth, caves depth, and the overworld a diorama vibe. Menus read clean, the font does not fight you, and the map breadcrumbs keep you from spinning in circles. It plays well on a pad and does not bury you in systems.
There are limits. Old quest logic peeks through in a few spots, and the grind shows if you skip side fights. Boss patterns are straightforward, sometimes too safe. On PC, performance is light and stable, but Intel Arc users should note the higher RAM requirement in the notes. Even so, the flow is hard to dislike. Two classic arcs, one clean package.
Verdict: respectful, lean, and pleasant to play, a tidy way to start the Erdrick saga.
